On 21st November, 2010 the founder and Chairperson of Maiti Nepal, an ECPAT affiliate group based in Nepal, Ms. Anuradha Koirala was awarded the CNN Heroes 2010 of the Year. This is the first time that a Nepali has won the prestigious international award. CNN’s Anderson Cooper announced the result at the conclusion of the fourth-annual CNN Heroes: An All – Star Tribune, from the Shrine Auditorium amid a gala event in Los Angeles, California, before an audience of nearly 5,000.
Anuradha Koirala was chosen by the public in an online poll that ran for eight weeks on CNN.com. Anuradha was introduced by actress Demi Moore, who along with her husband, Ashton Kutcher, have established DNA, The Demi and Ashton Foundation, which aims to eliminate child sex slavery worldwide.
Maiti Nepal is known for its mission to curb women trafficking from Nepal to the sex industries abroad, and rescue and rehabilitation of over 12,000 victims since 1993. “The honour has made us more responsible to overcome a shared concern of trafficking in humans. We should not wait for tomorrow what we can do today. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all who supported me”, she said.
