A Timaru man was sentenced to 4 years and 9 months in prison by the Christchurch District Court for online sexual exploitation of children. The case began when Customs intercepted him at Christchurch Airport on August 20, 2024, finding 306 child sexual abuse files on his phone. A subsequent home raid uncovered a hard drive with 173,000+ child exploitation files, including 33 hours of severe-category videos showing the rape and abuse of hundreds of tamariki worldwide.
